Building Community Through the Power of Reading: Hit the Books

Writer: SCA Media SCA Media

At Seaside Christian, community spirit is vibrant and contagious, especially when we engage our young learners in the joy of reading. Each year the Delmarva Shorebirds and The Brace Place sponsor a reading event called "Hit the Books." This campaign unites thousands of students across Delmarva to celebrate their literary successes while fostering a sense of community. This year, we were thrilled to see our very own 3rd Grader, Kinley Will, shine as she won the bookmark contest, competing against 55,000 students from 118 schools!

How "Hit the Books" Works: Fostering the Joy of Reading

The reading initiative, sponsored by the Brace Place and the Delmarva Shorebirds, has shown tremendous success. During six weeks, students are challenged to read at least four books, and will record thier completed readings on their bookmark (sent home with every student).

To motivate participation, students have the chance to win exciting rewards like two free tickets to an SCA game night at the Delmarva Shorebirds this spring, (when they turn in their completed bookmarks to their homeroom teacher). Those who receive their tickets after completing thier bookmark, are also awarded the honor of running onto the field with Sherman, the beloved mascot of the Shorebirds. Kinley’s opportunity to make the opening pitch on our SCA game night, creates an upbeat atmosphere that fosters our SCA TEAM SPIRIT!

Students are not just excited for their moment on the field; they are also motivated by the friendly competition. The school with the highest "Hit the Books" participation percentage stands to win $1,000! This challenge inspires both students and teachers, fostering shared success through the power of reading.

Reading as a Pathway to Success

Programs like Hit the Books, encourage exploration of different genres, enhancing students' understanding of the world around them. When students work together towards their reading goals, they motivate each other. Celebrating Kinley’s achievement as a community inspires her peers and promotes growth among all participants. This collaborative approach provides a valuable learning experience for every student, regardless of their reading level.

Fostering a Vibrant Community

At Seaside Christian, we know that community-building through events, not only enhances students’ academic growth but also strengthens our bonds as a community. The collaboration among students, families, and sponsors creates a rich celebration of learning that will motivate generations to come.

As we look forward to the SCA game night (date to be announced) and Kinley’s special moment, we invite our community to come together. Let’s celebrate our collective love for literature while uplifting the achievements of our young literary stars!
